New to iOS development, to what degree is it required for me to use XCode if Unity is my primary means of development?

Hi, I recently bought a mac for the purpose of developing for Apple. I've seen a lot of conflicting information about how 'necessary' it is to use XCode for developing iOS apps. Can anyone clear this up for me? IS Unity a replacement for XCode, or do I need to use both platforms extensively? Thanks.
